GOODBYE 16:9?! CES 2021 TRENDS

CES is one of the most influential technology events in the world and it’s 2021 run concluded not too long ago. It has everything to do with technology. From 3D printing all the way to lifestyle and so much more. One trend that has finally taken over can be so overlooked that many won’t even notice till it’s too late, aspect ratio. It looks like 16 by 9 is out but what could this mean for designers of websites, apps and more? Let’s find out.

If you have any of the current Windows laptops, there is a good chance that it is 16 by 9. It’s been a staple for the longest time. However, with tablets and Apple products, the ratio has been slowly changing. Even most phones are at a constant 16 by 9 ratio as well. But with everything getting more and more compact, the need for maximizing the use of space has become a necessity.

With 16 by 9, most everything has become cramped into such a small space. Hence why Apple Macbooks work mostly with 16 by 10. If you use a Microsoft Surface you mostly see a 3 by 2 ratio. And this CES has shown us that 16 by 10 and 3 by 2 displays are becoming more common. Dell, Lenovo, HP and even LG and Asus have been inching closer to a more squared look compared to what we are used to. Does this mean 16 by 9 is dying? Not quite.

16 by 9 displays are still holding strong. However, with this slow but ever approaching change, it’s good to keep up with the design aspects to best suit the medium. Designers will have to learn to adapt their current techniques for UI/UX towards this new medium. Websites won’t flow the same if you design it based on a 16 by 9 model and people choose to go with a 3 by 2 model.

This may seem like a boring change; however, the impact it has in the long run can quickly change how techniques and designs work.
